What is a DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) converts website names into IP addresses, making internet navigation easier.

Instead of remembering numeric IP addresses like 1.2.3.4, you use memorable domain names like website.com.

How DNS Query Works:

  1. Your computer asks DNS server: "What IP address is website.com on?"
  2. DNS server replies: "It's 1.2.3.4"
  3. Browser shows website.com but loads content from 1.2.3.4

This process is invisible to users. To check a website's IP address:

  • Windows: nslookup website.com
  • macOS/Linux: host website.com
